The Pentagon
With steel reserved for the war effort, the Pentagon was built as a reinforced concrete structure — a design that cut its steel use by almost two-thirds, enough by contemporary estimates to build a battleship. Ground was broken on September 11, 1941, and over 15,000 workers labored around the clock to finish it in just 16 months. It stands on 41,492 cast-in-place concrete piles, and 435,000 cubic yards of concrete went into the structure — seven times what the Empire State Building used. Sixty years later, that original concrete construction helped to minimize the damage when the building was struck on September 11, 2001.
