Alvord Lake Bridge: The First Reinforced Concrete Bridge in America
The Alvord Lake Bridge is the first reinforced concrete bridge built in America. Built in 1889, The Alvord Lake Bridge is a small pedestrian underpass and arch structure in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, CA. The bridge was constructed as a single arch 64 feet wide with a 20-foot span and it allows visitors coming from the Haight Ashbury District and entering the park from the east safe crossing over the drive between Alvord Lake and Kezar Drive.
The bridge was designed and constructed by Ernest L. Ransome, an innovator in reinforced concrete design, mixing equipment, and construction systems. Ransome was an English born engineer and architect. His father had patented an artificial stone process in 1844, and Ernest had apprenticed in his father’s factory.
In 1884, Ransome patented a reinforced concrete system consisting of a series of square cold-twisted iron bars, which is essentially a rebar system. From there, he patented a reinforced concrete construction technique called the Ransome System. The reinforcement bars were embedded longitudinally near the underside of the arch and bent in approximately the same curve as the arch.
The Alvord Lake Bridge also displays other interesting details. The bridge is built of concrete, but the concrete was formed to have the appearance of stone. Ransome’s use of concrete formliners to make the concrete look like stone is another technique that he pioneered and patented. Though it has seen some improvements in technology, his technique of using formliners remains in use in concrete design today.
Perhaps the most unusual detail of the Alvord Lake Bridge is underneath the bridge. Ransome incorporated decorative concrete stalactites designed to make the underside of the bridge the natural look of a cave.
Besides pioneering the concept of reinforced concrete construction, Ransome also became well-known for designing and manufacturing concrete mixers and other equipment for concrete construction.
Ransome’s contemporaries were skeptical about his reinforced concrete ideas for construction. Frustrated and bitter at the building community’s indifference to concrete construction, Ransome left San Francisco just a few years after the construction of the bridge. Ironically, the Alvord Lake Bridge, survived the Great San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 in remarkable shape, vindicating Ransome’s faith in the method. Designated a historic civil engineering landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1969, the Alvord Lake Bridge is still in service today.
