NRMCA Expanding the Concrete Industry Through Promotion, Advocacy, Education and Leadership

Action Requested:

Comments Needed to Renew Product Category Rule for Concrete

NRMCA is updating the Product Category Rule (PCR) for concrete and is seeking comments from stakeholders, including concrete producers and product suppliers. Product Category Rules (PCR) define the criteria for producing an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). PCRs have a shelf life of five years and the current PCR is expiring in 2018. Over the past 18 months, NRMCA, in collaboration with the Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF) and key industry participants, has revised the PCR to meet changes in international standards.

The next required step is a public comment period. This part of the process will be managed by NSF International’s National Center for Sustainability Standards (NCSS). NSF-NCSS is launching a public comment period through July 27 to obtain feedback. Your participation is highly encouraged as the renewed PCR will impact EPD developed for the following five years. Also, as LEED v4 and its promotion of EPDs are being discovered in project specifications, it is imperative that the public PCR review is robust.

Please access the dedicated NSF Web site to review the concrete PCR and provide comments by Friday, July 27. The NSF contact is Jessica Slomka; she can be reached at jslomka@nsf.org. For more information about the PCR renewal project or EPDs in the green building industry, contact James Bogdan at jbogdan@nrmca.org or 412-420-4138.
