The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) Board of Directors has appointed NRMCA Senior Vice President, Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar as secretary of the Multi-Hazard Mitigation Council, effective October 1. The Multi-Hazard Mitigation Council is an advisor on major policy issues involving multi-hazard disaster resilience and risk reduction and plays a critical role in advancing national resilience by promoting effective mitigation strategies across a wide range of natural and man-made hazards as part of a whole building strategy.

Rashid-Sumar’s leadership in this new role will be valuable in guiding collaborative efforts, shaping policy recommendations and supporting research that strengthens the safety and sustainability of our built environment.

In confirming the appointment, NIBS Board Chairman Charlie D. Curlin, Jr., praised Ms. Rashid-Sumar for her leadership and support, stating “your commitment of time and strategic and tactical engagement will enable us to further our collective missions and the 2023-2026 NIBS Strategic Plan. We will look to you to identify any future needs of the Council, NIBS and our many stakeholders. On behalf of NIBS, we look forward to working with you to advance innovative solutions for our nation’s built environment.”

“This will enhance NRMCA’s ability to advocate for risk reduction, life cycle value and community-based resilient solutions in codes which would naturally steer designers and owners toward the use of ready mixed concrete,” added NRMCA Executive Vice President, Strategic Operations, Brian Killingsworth.

In addition to her new role with NIBS, Rashid-Sumar is also president-elect of The Society of Fire Protection Engineers, the world’s leading professional society representing those practicing in the field of fire protection and fire safety engineering.
