The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association has named Melissa Verwest, PE, senior director, sustainability programs. In her role, Ms. Verwest will lead the administration, growth and market expansion of NRMCA’s sustainability services portfolio, including Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) certifications and related future offerings. She will report to Senior Vice President, Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar as part of the Association’s Codes and Standards department.
A Professional Engineer in Washington State, Ms. Verwest brings more than 20 years of experience as structural design engineer and is well versed in industry sustainability codes, policies and innovations which will translate to the growing sustainability sector of the ready mixed concrete industry. She joins NRMCA after having served as corporate sustainable materials program lead at member company Knife River Corp. Prior to joining Knife River, Ms. Verwest provided technical support for precast solutions at another NRMCA member, Oldcastle Materials, and as a project manager at Coffman Engineers.
She is already known to many Association staff and members by way of chairing the Sustainability Subcommittee of the NRMCA Promotions Committee. In addition, Ms. Verwest has been an adjunct professor at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, for more than 15 years, teaching a senior design capstone course coordinated by the Center for Engineering Design and Entrepreneurship (CEDE) and a study abroad sustainability course in Delft, Netherlands.
