Sixth Floor Museum Tour
The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza chronicles the assassination and legacy of President John F. Kennedy; interprets the Dealey Plaza National Historic Landmark District and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza; and presents contemporary culture within the context of presidential history. The permanent exhibition examines the life, death and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. Films, historic footage and hundreds of photographs and artifacts chronicle Kennedy’s 1960 presidential campaign and his influence on current events. The sniper’s perch and storage space where a rifle was found remain preserved as they appeared on that fateful day. Also on display are cameras that captured Kennedy’s motorcade on film, a scale model of Dealey Plaza created by the FBI for the Warren Commission investigation, and much more.

The tour will continue with the plaza, located on Houston Street between Elm and Commerce. Dealey Plaza was built in the 1930s and was named for civic leader George Bannerman Dealey. In 1993, it was designated a National Historic Landmark District. A well-known feature of the plaza is the grassy knoll, which rises from the north side of Elm Street. Perhaps the most emotional stop on the tour will be the JFK memorial, located on Market Street between Main and Commerce. Dedicated in 1970, it was designed by Philip Johnson as a cenotaph, or “open tomb,” to symbolize the freedom of President Kennedy’s spirit. The memorial’s simple architecture – a square, roofless room – allows visitors to, in the words of the architect, “find their own meaning.”

Guests will also see many more landmarks during the remaining driving portion of the tour. Among these stops are: Parkland Hospital, where President Kennedy was rushed immediately after the shooting, the Laurel Land Cemetery, and the Texas Theater. Other stops include the police station where Lee Harvey Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby and the Trade Mart, which was Kennedy's original destination on that infamous day.
