Silver Spring, MD – October 21, 2013 – The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association announced a series of award winners from its various programs during last month’s ConcreteWorks event held just outside Las Vegas. Following are summaries of each of those:

National Mixer Driver Champion – Jason Nelson from Cleveland, MS, earned top honors at this year’s NRMCA National Mixer Driver Championship. Nelson of NRMCA Producer member MMC Materials also earned the champion’s check of $2,500. Nelson has been driving a ready mixed concrete truck for MMC Materials, Inc. for 10 years. Second place and a check for $1,000 went to Billy Byrd of Wanatah, IN, who drives for NRMCA Producer member VCNA Prairie Material in Bridgeville, IL. Third place and a check for $500 went to Todd Brown of Grinnell, IA. He works for NRMCA Producer member Manatts, Inc. Joseph E. Carpenter Award – NRMCA’s Operations, Environmental & Safety Committee named Terry Jones, director of environmental, safety and health at NRMCA Producer member Irving Materials, Inc, (IMI) Indianapolis, its 2014 Joseph E. Carpenter Award recipient. This award is named in honor of Joseph E. Carpenter of Rinker Materials, West Palm Beach, FL, who was instrumental in the formation and early operation of the NRMCA Committee on Maintenance. The award was instituted in 1988 and is presented annually to persons who have demonstrated outstanding lifetime contributions to the ready mixed concrete industry in the fields of maintenance, environmental and safety.

Jones was named the award recipient for his longtime commitment to the OES Committee and the ready mixed concrete industry. He has been a leader and frequent contributor to the development of the highly successful NRMCA Safety Series publications, has been one of the primary developers of the NRMCA Safety Course, been a guest lecturer on numerous occasions and hosted courses at IMI facilities. The Carpenter Award was announced at ConcreteWorks and will be presented to Jones in Las Vegas in March 2014 at the NRMCA Annual Convention held in conjunction with the CONEXPO/CON-AGG show. Richard D. Gaynor Award – NRMCA’s Research Engineering & Standards (RES) Committee selected Gary M. Mullings as the recipient of the 2014 Richard D. Gaynor Award. Gary Mullings is the senior vice president of operations and compliance at NRMCA. The award is named for Gaynor who served as NRMCA executive vice president when he retired in 1996. The Gaynor award recognizes individuals who have shown excellence, through their personal dedication and devotion, and have made significant contributions to the ready mixed concrete industry in the areas of research, engineering and standards.

Mullings is marking his 40th year at NRMCA. He spent a large portion of his early career at NRMCA at its research laboratory in College Park, MD. About 15 years ago, Gary took on the leadership of the operations and compliance department and has led the efforts on regulatory compliance assistance and support of the ready mixed concrete industry. He is a primary instructor for the NRMCA Technical Short Course, plant manager, environmental and safety courses, and delivers a wide range of Webinars on current issues impacting the industry. Grassroots Activist of the Year Award – NRMCA’s Government Affairs Committee presented the 2012 Grassroots Activists of the Year Award to Bill Childs, CEO, Chaney Enterprises, Gambrills, MD, and John Carew, Carew Concrete, Appleton, WI, for their outstanding participation in NRMCA’s Government Affairs, CONCRETEPAC and grassroots programs. Childs has repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to the success of NRMCA’s advocacy initiatives by regularly attending and participating in meetings, conference calls and Webinars. He frequently travels to Washington, DC, to participate in Capitol Hill meetings as well as represent the ready mixed concrete industry during the Transportation Construction Coalition Fly-In. Most notably, he and his team at Chaney Enterprises encouraged their employees, customers and vendors to attend the annual RALLY for ROADS of which NRMCA is a primary organizer.

Carew has also repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to the success of NRMCA’s advocacy program by regularly attending and participating in meetings, conference calls and Webinars. He has conducted countless plant tours with his Members of Congress and regularly engages in grassroots alerts sent by NRMCA Government Affairs staff. Most notably, Carew provided a great service to the industry while testifying before the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Education and the Workforce regarding "Rushing Union Elections: Protecting the Interests of Big Labor at the Expense of Workers’ Free Choice."

Innovation in Training Award – The 2013 Innovation in Training winner is CEMEX- Phoenix’s JOB SAFE program. The award not only recognizes excellence in training, but also the effort to take a creatively different approach to accomplish a task. JOB SAFE was created from a driver’s idea. A program was developed, including a checklist brochure that is sent to a construction site prior to the mixer truck arriving. Because this inexpensive handout so succinctly captures the essence of what is needed to keep the job site safe, it can be replicated industry-wide, and therefore, is truly innovative. NRMCA’s Educational Activities Committee also conferred a special recognition award to MMC Materials, Madison, MS, and sister company, Bayou Concrete, Gulfport, MS, for their company-wide emphasis on the health and the well being of all their employees.

Created in 1930, NRMCA, a non-profit organization based in Silver Spring, MD, represents the producers of ready mixed concrete and the companies that provide materials, equipment and support to the industry. It conducts education, training, promotion, research, engineering, safety, environmental, technological, lobbying and regulatory programs.
