Many Industry Leaders Honored for Their Contributions
Silver Spring, MD – April 20, 2010 – The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association has presented the following awards during its annual convention held last month in Austin, TX.
2010 Richard D. Gaynor Award – Lawrence R. Roberts, Roberts Consulting Group, LLC. Larry Roberts is currently the principal of his independent consulting firm Roberts Consulting LLC. He retired after a 38-year career from Grace Construction Products where he served in many technical capacities. After retiring from Grace, Roberts worked as principal scientist with the CTLGroup for 2 years. Roberts has dedicated his career to the understanding of the complex chemistry of cement and admixtures and the resulting performance in concrete. A special interest of his has been the application of simple calorimetric techniques for understanding the interaction of cements and supplementary cementitious materials with admixtures.
Richard D. Gaynor retired as executive vice president of NRMCA and its then sister organization, the National Aggregates Association, in 1996 after more than 40 years of service with the associations. In 1997, the NRMCA Research, Engineering and Standards (RES) Committee established the Richard D. Gaynor Award in his honor.
William B. Allen Award – Tom Larkin, U.S. Concrete. Larkin has been in the ready mixed concrete industry since 1989, holding various positions, including vice president of finance for Southdown’s (now Cemex) Concrete Products operations; regional controller for RMC’s eastern U.S. operations (now also Cemex); vice president of finance for U.S. Concrete’s South Central region and currently corporate director of finance at U.S. Concrete. In his current role, he is responsible for valuation of potential merger/acquisition opportunities, standardization & optimization of business processes and development & implementation of related software packages. He is past chairman of NRMCA’s Business Administration Committee having served on the committee for almost 15 years.
The Allen award is named after one of the ready mixed concrete industry’s most distinguished and accomplished figures, Bill Allen, who has more than 55 years of concrete and aggregates-related experience.
State Association of the Year Award – The British Columbia Ready-Mixed Concrete Association (BCRMCA). Some of BCRMCA’s recent accomplishments include:
· Development of a comprehensive pervious concrete paving program, utilizing NRMCA’s pervious certification program, which brought together a core group of contractors and producers to grow the market for pervious concrete. Filming the resulting projects, BCRMCA developed a video that is being used as a sales tool, to recruit contractors and as a general promotion tool for the industry.
· Activating the BC concrete industry at a grassroots level to lobby the provincial government in an ongoing fight against a new law that requires the use of wood as the primary building material in all new provincially funded buildings.
· In collaboration with the Construction Safety Network and WorkSafe BC, developed a safety video to reduce the hazards related to bringing mobile equipment onto a construction site, using concrete delivery as a case study.
· Organized and delivered a flatwork forum for contractors, finishers and concrete producers to address an increasing issue related to scaling concrete in residential flatwork. This forum was designed to help each group understand their own roles as well as their interdependency with each other to deliver durable concrete.
National High School Essay Contest – Brook Overbay, Richmond, KY. Ms. Overbay’s essay, Concrete: For Today, For the Future, told concrete’s story of quality, durability, innovation and environmental superiority. By having concrete speak for itself in the first-person, she added a creative element that lifted her essay beyond merely stating facts and made concrete into its own being, one that could literally sell itself.
Promoter of the Year – John Swart, Vulcan Materials Company, Mid-Atlantic Region. Swart, who covers territory from Baltimore south to Tidewater, VA, was honored for his dedication and enthusiasm for concrete promotion and for his collaborative approach in advancing the interests of concrete not just for his own company but for the industry at large. He has helped advance the concept of the “consultative” sales person, even continuing this philosophy at the dispatch and plant level, helping make Vulcan a company of concrete promoters. Swart’s greatest recent successes were in the area of producer-supplied, value-added product conversions, notably the use of fiber and color. He was also instrumental last year in converting more than 25,000 cubic yards of concrete from steel/wire to fiber reinforcement.
2010 Lifetime Achievement Award for Promotion – Eugene Martineau. Martineau’s career in the concrete, aggregate, precast and building materials industries has spanned more than 40 years. He has held senior positions at a number of companies, including Allied Ready Mix, Ready Mix Concrete Company, Lehigh Portland Cement Company, Allied Products Company, Southdown and Beale Concrete. In 1998, he was one of the founders and first president and CEO of U.S. Concrete. Martineau has led promotion efforts in several states, including Colorado and Florida. He played central roles in the establishment of RMC 2000, a grassroots industry movement that propelled the industry to face the challenges of a new century, and the Concrete Industry Management Program which is now installed in five universities across the U.S. and is providing the industry with its future leaders.
