From the Chairman
A Message from Frank Craddock
Chairman of the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association
Dear Industry Colleague,
I encourage you to join me at Disney World in Orlando where our
2009 NRMCA Annual Convention is being held. This year’s
convention features a challenging three-day mix of meetings on a
variety of topics that you will no doubt find of interest and
value. Also, if you have time for any extra-curricular
activities, March normally yields wonderful weather in Central
Florida.
We are gathering to chart a path for the long-term financial
prosperity of our industry. If that sounds ambitious, remember
that current economic conditions demand of us a level of
commitment to ensure the viability of our livelihood. Because of
that mindset, NRMCA’s Board of Directors and Association
professionals are using “Accelerating Opportunities” as the
overall theme of this year’s convention.
The theme is supported by an impressive roster of guest
speakers, including an economic outlook by Rich Karlgaard,
publisher of Forbes, the nation’s highest-circulation business
publication, and editor of Forbes ASAP, a magazine covering the
major developments, trends and implications of the Information
Age. He is a regular guest on CNN/FN's "Digital Jam,” an
acclaimed industry speaker, and has written several Manager's
Journal columns for The Wall Street Journal. In 1998, he was
named to Upside magazine's Elite 100 in the computer and
communications industries.
Another noted speaker is Arthur C. Nelson, PhD, FAICP,
presidential professor of city & metropolitan planning and
director of metropolitan research at the University of Utah, who
will discuss housing market trends. Dr. Nelson's work has been
front page news at USA Today and the Wall Street Journal, and
has also been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post
and the Financial Times, among numerous other newspapers. He has
been interviewed for National Public Radio, CBS, CNN, Reuters,
Associated Press and ABC. In addition to his extensive
experience in academic settings, Dr. Nelson has 18 books and
more than 200 other publications to his credit, many of which
are standards in the fields of urban development management,
real estate and public policy, and infrastructure finance. Scot
Horst, Chair, LEED Steering Committee, will discuss concrete in
a sustainable world. Mr. Horst is widely recognized as a leader
in the sustainable development movement.
And while we’re stressing the future of our industry, I would be
remiss if I did not mention NRMCA’s Developing Industry Leaders
program. Created in 2004 to provide an opportunity for up and
coming managers from member companies to challenge themselves
and to strategically address issues facing our industry, this
year’s DIL teams will present their research and findings to the
membership. Join us as we find out more about their selected
topics and the latest trends which are central to the
advancement of our industry.
Committees, education courses, technical conferences...the list
goes on. In short, planning for a bright and strong future is a
task we all must do, and it starts during our three days in
Orlando. Please join us.
